![]() ![]() In Super Mario 64, a modified Shepard tone is incorporated into the music of the endless staircase, the staircase to the penultimate room in the castle. This may seem very simple, but it's taking a mechanic used in 20th century modern classical music of creating an audio illusion. It evokes the feeling of being lost in this level and also the weirdness. It could have been stereotypical "jungle" music, but used an ethnic folk style hardly ever used. The use of Indonesian gamelan music is very unique. It has an odd rhythmic groove that is very subtle. The use of minimal amounts of assets to create catchy and memorable melodies in older games was quite advanced. David Wise does this perfectly with Donkey Kong Country 2. Then you have when music is so closely tied with an environment that it becomes one with it. ![]() Toby Fox did this with Undertale so well. Also, the use of motifs and themes in variations is quite advanced. Koji Kondo does this with his soundtracks. I feel like the cohesive use of multiple genres all tied into one soundtrack is quite advanced. To me, advanced isn't exactly just odd time signatures and virtuosic instrumental parts.
